What it means when the two boxes disagree
An instruction box that silently drops the tail of a paste produces a working agent. It answers, it looks right, and it answers from different instructions than the ones that passed the smoke test. Nothing on screen says so. The character count does.
A difference of exactly one is almost always the final line break, which a file has and an input box may not keep. Anything larger means text went missing, and the fix is never to edit the fence in place: re-paste the whole file, count again, then run the smoke fixture before the agent touches real work.
Where this check comes from
The default count here, 2,422 characters, is the First-Response Drafter’s instruction fence exactly as built and tested on a real Microsoft 365 tenant. Every fence in the pack ships with its count in one table for this comparison, and the pack’s fixtures folder carries one smoke input and one answer key per agent so the count check is followed by a behaviour check.
The check is one of the fixtures in The IT AI Stack. You do not need the pack to use this page. That is the point of publishing the page.
The count is the agent’s. The signature is a person’s.
Practitioner guidance. Counting rules differ between editors and instruction boxes; this page reports two readings of what you pasted and compares each to the number you typed. It sends nothing anywhere.
